Measurements have existed since the dawn of time and are as important today as they’ve ever been. In terms of a sheer definition, measurement is finding a number that shows the size or amount of something.
Two general systems are used in the modern day: the imperial system and the metric system, each with their own benefits and drawbacks as well as varying localities that use them.
As far as what can be measured, basically everything can. Primarily, the most common types of measurements are mass, time, volume, area, and length. Each of these categories has different subcategories beneath it: for example, “time” has date, which in turn has days, weeks, months, years, seasons, and so forth.
Different ways to measure and record measurements continue to improve as our methods of scientific technology grow in quality and ease of use, allowing us to become more accurate, connected, and knowledgeable about the world around us.
