As parents and caregivers, we place importance on reading, writing, and math. But what about kindness and empathy? Although we feel like this should be an inherent trait, modeling kindness is extremely important for a child’s development.
Kindness and empathy are linked with something called “emotional intelligence.” More and more research shows how absolutely crucial it is to the success of a developing brain to nurture and support emotional intelligence, particularly empathy.
Empathy, in short, is the ability to think about how something would feel to someone else. It’s the notion of putting yourself in another person’s shoes, about being able to grasp and comprehend the other person’s feelings and emotions. Kindness can be described as being generous, caring, and friendly.
This is a unit study that could go on for a lifetime. Simple acts of kindness and empathy can result in greater overall happiness and making the world a better place.
